Foolish Penelope

As Penelope waited patiently for Ulysses, she kept her many suitors at bay with various clever strategies. Her weaving in the day and undoing her work by night for years – in an effort to stay faithful to that one man who had pretty much gone AWOL , has to be one of the most touching or absurd (depending on the way you want to look at it) gesture made by a woman in Mythology.

You should have been less romantic and more pragmatic Penelope – you ought to have lived and loved during the many long years it took for that man to come back to you. So many empty, barren and frigid years in which you withered a little more each and every passing day, pining for a man you had no way of knowing was coming back to you – sad, foolish Penelope.
