It’s official, folks! I’m now a student. I went out for coffee this afternoon with a few of my Master’s fellows, none of us had met prior to this meeting so it was all a bit tentative at first, but we soon got into the swing of things.
Although there is a broad range of ages on this postgraduate “Creative Writing” Master’s course, it was only the young peeps who turned up for coffee today. A funny moment occurred when one of them said apropos of nothing that “all of us are in our early to mid-twenties” – I’ll never see 30 again so I couldn’t let his assumption pass without saying anything, cue gasps when I mentioned I wasn’t actually “one of them”.
It always amuses me when people learn my age and respond as such: “no way, I don’t believe it” or even “are you sure?”
As ifΒ anybody would purposefully lie about being older than they really are!
My mother didn’t give me much but she did pass on her (good) genes, hence why everybody always assumes I’m far younger than I actually am. My siblings and I all look younger than our years and we used to hate it when we were teenagers, and beyond that – it is NOT fun being requested to show ID to get into a bar when you’re 30 – suffice to say we have learnt to appreciate this genetic blessing as we got older.
That (slightly) awkward moment aside, it was a really good meeting – we are all writers and all passionate about learning to hone our skills. There was lots of enthusiasm in that coffee shop, it was really exciting…stimulating! In exactly 2 weeks time, we start with the actual course – studying while working full-time, not to mention trying to maintain some kind of social life is going to be challenging but…I can’t f*****g wait.Β
congrats!

I’m so excited for you, ‘young lady’! π It must be amazing to sit and chew the fat with so many like-minded people…I’m also incredibly jealous! Enjoy yourself and learn lots, and TEACH lots, because you have a wonderful, sharp mind yourself! π Best of luck!

Aw, thank you Adam! It IS amazing to be sharing with other writers, as you and I both know from those wonderful drinking evenings in B-town π
Your comment both made me laugh and choked me up a little π
Ps: I haven’t forgotten about you and will be visiting shortly π

Thank you, Joanne! I love that you’re excited for me π
Maybe you should think about doing something like that, the idea clearly has appeal for you π
I do hope your collarbone is getting better by the way π³

It’s funny you should say that. I recently found out that 2 of the universities in Toronto offer free undergrad tuition to people who are 60+ (the only positive I’ve discovered so far to turning 60).
I’ve been seriously considering starting a new undergrad program in January. The problem is – I don’t know what! I am leaning towards Journalism though.
.. and thanks for asking about my collarbone. Because of the displacement in the bone, it’s taking a lot longer to heal. I’ve just been given another 2 months
Otherwise, it’s ok. I can ride and do yoga again .. although preferably not at the same time π

Ohhhh, journalism! I know I’m biased but I loved getting qualified, it was so, so interesting. Apart from the Shorthand which was the only thing that almost defeated me but that’s another story, lol
You should go for it, if that’s what you want, don’t hesitate, life is too short!
I’m sorry about the extended recovery time though π¦ As long as you can still exercise, that’s something, right? Gotta look on the positive side π

Being asked if you are sure of your age is something that always makes me laugh lol. I’m really excited for you and by extension all that it means for your blog as well. Through your writings always come inspiration and now we can learn the techniques of a master’s degree without the student loan. For that I salute you!

I’m SOOOOO fantastically proud of you Nat!
And …
are you sure? π
What can I say? Some perks to being French (think catherine deneuve) me thinks π
Like you (no surprise, as we’re related in some ways I am sure) I get told that, although less so now than when I was younger, probably because a lot of how old you are considered, is based upon how you act and I’m waaaay too serious these days much to my chagrin) but when pissed as a fart I am still carded if that counts for anything π
Viva the wisdom of your years and the lightheartedness of your youth my beautiful friend and may all good things come your way with this new course of yours, I am certain of your success and this was a very, very good choice on your part.
We’re all so proud of you – xo

You do look young and beautiful and…what is this about you being waaaay too serious these days? I urge you to inject a little more silliness in your life! Also, I’m pretty sure we are related in some way, it just MAKES SENSE!

N’est-ce pas? Quel courage de faire un Masters. J’envisageais il y a peu de faire un doctorat (Lettres et Philo) mais, j’avoue, pas eu le courage. Quel feignant! π
