How Important is it to be well-read?

This is a really fab blog by Tom about being well-read – I adored it! Go read & like the original post, folks 🙂

Idle blogs of an idle fellow

My mother is probably the wisest person I’ve ever known. She’s not schooled, she’s not well read. But she has a philosophy of life that makes well-read people seem like morons. –  Gene Simmons

How well-read you are has been a standard measure of intelligence, social kudos and pulling power since the written word was invented. In fact, it’s hard to resist conjecture that it was invented simply to impress other people. And this lingers, despite a digital age of commuters watching TV box sets on public transport, or publicly declaring how moronic they are by playing pointlessly additive games such as the ubiquitous Candy Crush. These activities are for unplugging the mind, not engaging it. 1. Thanks for the post by your friend. I must confess it pissed me off so much. Not because of the post which, as usual, is very well-written, but because of the Premise: “You’re not well-read if you only read white.” Wait, wait, the next step is: “don’t read white”?
    Grrr.

    1. I know, it’s insane. But that’s where we are right now. I keep telling myself it’s a case of ‘temporary insanity’, you know, just a phase and it will all go back to normal soon…but sometimes, I get really pissed off all the same.

      1. Political Correctness started in the 80’s. That is anew avatar. I am afraid it will last a long time. Current “decolonialism” and other nonsense are just a reincarnation of various failed ideologies, marxism for one. And as a lifelong “expat” I clearly see that the most vocal against a supposed “white” power come from cultures that have failed miserably on two planes: economy and freedom. Namely: Africa and the Arab world. There. I’ve said it. (Been there, I know). One might add Latin America but that’s another issue. The only culture(s) that is/are not complaining? Asia. Malaysia’s GDP per capita is now close to France. Korea is richer. Do you hear them complain? Never.
